Michigan Local Government Management Association

2004 MLGMA MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

Attached is the 2004 application form for membership in the Michigan City Management Association (MLGMA).  If you wish to renew your membership or enroll for the first time, the application form should be filled out and returned with a check in the appropriate amount to the Michigan City Management Association, PO Box 7409, Ann Arbor, MI 48107-7409.

Copies of the application form may be duplicated and distributed to members of your staff and others who may qualify (membership categories and dues structure are listed on the back side of the application) however, due to the exclusive nature of membership, distribution should be made only to those who qualify.

The MLGMA is recognized nationally  for its broad range of programming and support services it provides to our members.  Some of these programs include the Annual Winter Institute and Summer Workshop, the quarterly newsletter, Range Rider assistance, the Arthur Bromage Intern & Report and support services provided by the Managers in Transition Committee.

In recent years, the Association has built upon these programs by offering the MLGMA Colloquium that recognizes the historical partnership with the Michigan Municipal League and provides a showcase for the profession, the MLGMA Website including the newly offered Listserv program, an annual independent financial review, liability insurance coverage for Directors and Association Committee members, MLGMA scholarships to support intensive professional development opportunities, and expanded efforts to assist managers in transition through access to technology and counseling assistance.

As can be expected, such programs and services come at a cost and the MLGMA Board of Directors has subsequently reviewed the current dues structures that were last increased in 1995.  Following their deliberations, the Board authorized an increase in membership dues beginning in 2002 as follows:

Full Member

  -

$75
Associate Member  -  $50
Consulting  -  $100
Cooperative/Affiliate  -  $30
Educational  -  $10

As mentioned above, the historical and newly implemented programs and services are designed to provide support to our membership and stability to the Association, and it is felt that the dues structure continues to represent a good value vis-à-vis other professional associations.

The Association's upcoming Annual Winter Institute is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28 to Friday, January 31, 2003, at the Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest.  Registration materials will be mailed to all members.  As has been our practice, memberships will not be taken at the Institute.  Those who become members before the Institute will receive a reduced registration fee.  Others will pay the non-member registration fee.

The membership application form also calls for information on an applicant's sex, race and county where employed.  The inquiry is totally benevolent and voluntary.  MLGMA's Constitution requires the Association's Board of Directors Nominating Committee to consider representation of "all geographical areas, size of communities represented and to women, minorities and assistants."

Also included with the membership application is a solicitation for volunteers for MLGMA committees.  The list of volunteers will be provided to MLGMA President-Elect Michael Herman, (City Manager, Albion) for assistance in the annual committee appointment process.  Please include your committee preferences when you return your membership application.

Lastly, please review the ICMA Code of Ethics and the MLGMA Rules of Procedure for investigating ethics complaints involving members of the MLGMA who are not members of ICMA.  Please note that membership in the MLGMA also confers adherence to the ICMA Code of Ethics.

On behalf of the MLGMA Board of Directors, we appreciate your membership in the Association and look forward to working with you to advance the ideals of the profession in the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

Kathie S. Grinzinger
President, MLGMA
Michael S. Herman
