MCMA
COMMITTEES
2001
Awards and Recognition Committee
This Committee exists to
encourage application of all ICMA award categories and to review applications
to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria. In addition, the Committee
is charged with appropriate celebration and recognition of manager's and
management accomplishments.
Community Education Committee
Formerly part of the
Professional Development Committee, a distinct committee was established by the
Board to work with the educational community and publishers of educational
materials on teaching students civics and local government and the role of city
management therein.
Ethics Committee
This Committee serves as
a state review agency for ICMA to address charges against members regarding
breach of the ethical code. All members of MCMA are subject to sanctions for
any violations whereof which occur during their membership. This Committee is
responsible for implementing the MCMA
Rules of Procedure for Enforcement of the ICMA Code of Ethics. In addition,
it looks to program development to strengthen the members' knowledge of
acceptable conduct under our code of ethics.
Managers In Transition Committee
This Committee is
charged with keeping track of managers in transition and developing programs
and services to assist them in their transition.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee
is a new committee combining the Diversity in the Workplace Committee and the
Assistants Committee. The broad charge of this Committee is: to identify new
members of the profession; to proactively welcome them to the profession or to
Michigan; to encourage participation from new members at the Winter Institute
and Summer Workshop; to ensure first-time conference participation is positive;
to periodically survey new members, and women and minority members, regarding
their attitudes about the MCMA; to provide mentoring or other supportive
services to new members; and to make suggestions to the Winter Institute and
Summer Workshop planning committees regarding contemporary diversity or
assistantship issues.
Nominating Committee
This Committee develops
a slate of officers for the upcoming year. The goals are identified with the
Association's Constitution. The Committee is composed of seven members, which
include the immediate past president, who acts as Chair, the President-Elect,
and five members at large, with all five being selected from different Michigan
Municipal League regions.
Professional Development Committee
This Committee serves as
the focus for the training and professional development need of MCMA members.
The Committee reviews other training needs and opportunities and makes
recommendations to the MCMA Board. In addition, the Committee administers the
scholarships program for MCMA members to attend various professional
development programs (e.g., Menninger Institute, Harvard University Senior
Executives in State and Local Government Program, etc.).
Public Policy Committee
This Committee provides
the Board of Directors with a working committee to review and make
recommendations on public policy issues affecting the city management
profession and local government. This Committee works closely with the Michigan
Municipal League in developing solutions to critical issues affecting local
government in Michigan.
Summer Workshop Planning Committee
This Committee plans the
Summer Workshop, which traditionally has carried a personal development theme.
While the Winter Institute is more general and emphasizes training and nuts and
bolts issues, the Summer Workshop is oriented to individual personal and
professional development and encourages family involvement in program sessions
and other workshop activities.
This Committee is
composed of village managers who act as a resource to provide information to
other village governments seeking to create village manager positions. This
Committee also seeks to identify specific needs of villages and attempts to
provide alternatives and/or solutions. (Note: Currently, this committee is in
the process of recommending that the focus of this committee be small
communities, not villages exclusively. The Board should take action on this
recommendation soon.)
Winter Institute Committee
This Committee organizes
an intense two and one-half day workshop that is centered around a broad array
of current management issues. The Winter Institute is the primary training
function provided by the Association and serves as the Association's annual
business meeting. For many managers, it is the only training or professional
development opportunity they will attend.
Web Site Development Committee
This Committee has the
responsibility of developing an MCMA web page and on-going administration of
the site.
