Mission

To provide networking and professional development opportunities for early to mid-career local government professionals.

 

Goals and Objectives

1. Assisting MLGMA in its overall goal of attracting students and professionals to local government management.
2. Provide networking and professional development opportunities for early to mid-career MLGMA members.
3. Help foster and maintain mentoring relationships between MLGMA Next Gen members and more experienced MLGMA members.

Goals and Objectives in Detail

1. Assisting MLGMA in its overall goal of attracting students and professionals to local government management.

  • Enhancing relationships between state universities and MLGMA.

    • Creating a presence at university sponsored job fairs.

    • Attending undergraduate and graduate government classes and advocating for the profession.

    • Explore any opportunities in working with student chapters of ICMA, for example the chapter at Central Michigan University.

  • Enhancing relationships with other professional organizations and MLGMA.

  • Promoting and advocating for entry level opportunities in local government management.

    • Notify universities when internships and other entry level opportunities are available in local government management.

    • Articulate and develop a plan to promote the benefits of having entry level positions such as paid internships, assistant to the city managers and assistant managers.

    • Develop a website and contact list to promote participation of Next Gen Committee activities.

  • Explore opportunities to assist other MLGMA committees who share this goal.

    • Develop ideas to enhance the MLGMA Fellowship Program.

      • Alternative funding and selection process.

    • Develop ideas to enhance the student session at the Winter Conference.

    • Develop ideas to enhance the Alumni Receptions at the Winter Conference.                             

 

2. Provide networking and professional development opportunities for early to mid-career MLGMA members.

  • Provide professional development opportunities focusing on issues relevant to early and mid-career professionals.

    • Develop a list of potential topics and speakers for upcoming events.

  • Provide social networking opportunities.

    • Continue Annual Winter & Summer Conference dinner as well as bi-annual meetings in Lansing.

 

3. Help foster and maintain mentoring relationships between MLGMA Next Gen members and more experienced MLGMA members.

  • Develop and implement MLGMA Mentorship Program.

    • Develop program goals and guidelines.

    • Create website to help promote and facilitate program.

  • Explore opportunities to assist other MLGMA committees who share this goal.

    • Develop ideas to enhance the first time attendee program at the Winter Conference.
